While the series title may bring to mind magical carousel rides of death, there’s really no connection. This is my darkest series, by far, but it’s been an interesting journey! Even though I feel like this series has really pushed me to grow in my writing and step out of my comfort zone, it has been incredibly tough to write. The idea for this series came from two words out of one of The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. He referenced one of the characters’ “godling hunger” and those two words really stuck with me. I couldn’t help but wonder what it would do to a person to be born with a strange hunger for pain and suffering that they had no explanation for.
Wicked Hunger (book 1)
They have to be when they are hiding a deadly secret. Day after day, they struggle to rein in their uncontrollable hunger for pain and suffering in order to live normal lives.
Things only get worse when Ivy Guerra appears with her pink-striped hair and secrets. The vicious hunger Ivy inspires is frightening, not to mention suspicious.
Vanessa’s instincts are rarely wrong, so when they tell her that Ivy’s appearance is a sign of bad things to come, she listens. She becomes determined to expose Ivy’s secrets. Vanessa tries to warn her brother, but Zander is too enamored with Ivy to pay attention to her conspiracy theories.
One of them is right about Ivy … but if they lose control of their hunger, it won’t matter who is right and who is wrong. One little slip, and they’ll all be dead.
Wicked Power (book 2)
Even though the Godling training that the arrogant David provides is indeed improving their control, his methods are cruel and harsh. Van barely restrains her anger, but Zander embraces the training. To him, it’s his only hope of redeeming himself.
Van’s always reliable intuition strengthens into frightening visions and leaves her fearing Zander’s future. She is desperate to protect her brother, but with her sixteenth birthday looming and the eruption of the full strength of her hunger on its way, she has her own problems to deal with.
Redemption and protection both take a back seat when a shocking discovery puts everything they have worked for in jeopardy. The choice between safety and freedom has never been more important, and in the end… they may not have a choice at all.
Wicked Glory (book 3)
Zander has failed to reproduce the spectacular show of power David is so desperate to see again, which puts him on the outs with his supposed mentor. In order to keep their bargain with the Eroi, he’s forced to work more closely with them, which means being subjected to Ivy’s mind-stealing presence again. Fighting his hunger becomes secondary to convincing her the Eroi are wrong about her purpose.
Once the most detested of the Roth siblings, Van has now become David’s pet. It’s clear he intends to take her into his inner circle, but at what price? Van is forced to decide what she’s willing to do in order to keep her family safe. If becoming David’s protege is the only way… can she live up to his expectations without losing herself completely?
Wicked Revenge (book 4)
Secrets are unraveling, but they only bring up more questions and not enough answers. While the Roth siblings attempt to recover from the devastating confrontation with the Godlings, each one must overcome their own demons to survive.
In the midst of trying to hold their personal lives together, the captured Richiamos must be rescued from Isolde’s grasp, the Godlings must find a way to battle the traitors intent on tearing them apart, and the truth of the Godlings’ true purpose must be uncovered.
There seems to be no end to the battles they are facing, but if they can just hold onto each other and their sanity long enough to survive, they might just save everyone.
